Pangasius — the mild, tender whitefish found in hot pot restaurants across Asia — is Vietnam's top fish export by value. Its neutral flavor makes it a natural fit for cuisines worldwide, from Chinese sauerkraut fish soup to Mexican tacos and Thai steamed fish with lime.

▍ Export Numbers

About 90% of Vietnam's pangasius production goes to export. In 2024, overseas sales surpassed USD 2 billion, with China, the U.S., and the EU taking nearly all of it.

▍ The Anti-Dumping Dispute Ends

It was precisely because Vietnamese pangasius sold so well in America that the U.S. slapped heavy anti-dumping duties on it in 2018, claiming the fish was being sold below fair market value. The two sides took the case to the WTO.

After years of negotiations, the dispute has finally been settled — bringing one of the longest-running trade battles in Vietnamese seafood to a close.

▍ Vietnam's Seafood Muscle

Vietnam lives up to its reputation as a land of fish and rice. Not long ago, Vietnamese shrimp exports also triggered trade friction. The pattern underscores how large Vietnam's seafood industry looms on the global stage.
