Vietnam's Avocados Are Seriously Good

Vietnam's Central Highlands grow top-quality avocados. With a USD 15 billion global market, they could follow coffee onto the world stage.

After more than two years living in Vietnam, my favorite drink is hands down the avocado smoothie. Rich, creamy, and deeply satisfying — and it costs less than USD 2. Hard not to love.

▍ A Central Highlands Crop

Avocados are not just a street-food staple. They are an important crop in Vietnam's Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) region. Farmers grow several varieties: the rich and buttery Sap, the transport-friendly Booth, and the smooth, low-fiber 034. These avocados supply the domestic market and are slowly finding their way abroad.

▍ Global Market Potential

The global avocado market is worth USD 15 billion, dominated by Mexico and other Latin American producers. Europe and the U.S. account for most consumption. Vietnam's avocado exports remain small, but rising global demand and favorable growing conditions give the country a real shot at building international recognition — much like it did with coffee.

Next time you enjoy an avocado smoothie, consider this: that cup of "green gold" may represent Vietnam's next big agricultural export story.
