With Metro Line 1 now running, commuters are already benefiting — and anticipation for future lines is building. The full blueprint was drawn up long ago. Step into any Line 1 station today and you will see a network map showing all 11 planned routes.

Having grown up riding Taipei's metro when it only had the red, blue, and brown lines, and watching it gradually add the orange, green, circular, and light rail lines over the years, it is remarkable to see Ho Chi Minh City displaying its entire future network from day one. The ambition is unmistakable.

▍ The Network Plan

By 2035, the city plans to add 355 km of metro lines. By 2045, the total network will reach roughly 510 km. Expansion will not stay within the city center — lines are planned to reach Di An, Thu Dau Mot, Nhon Trach, Long Thanh, Ben Luc, and even the coastal district of Can Gio. The most anticipated: a direct metro line to Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

▍ Challenges and Expectations

A blueprint alone is not enough. Land acquisition, funding, and construction schedules could all cause delays. Running multiple lines simultaneously demands coordination across agencies — and patience from residents.

Still, judging by the quality of Line 1, Ho Chi Minh City's metro network dream is no longer a fantasy. The city is heading toward a future of better transit and higher quality of life. Once the full network is operational and convenient enough to change commuting habits, perhaps the streets will trade some of their honking and exhaust fumes for the comfort of a metro ride.
