In 2027, Vietnam will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit for the third time — this time on the resort island of Phu Quoc.

▍ Why Phu Quoc?

Vietnam's previous APEC host cities were Hanoi in 2006 and Da Nang in 2017. Hanoi, as the capital, symbolized Vietnam's formal entry as a significant APEC economy. Da Nang in 2017 aimed to boost the international profile of Vietnam's only centrally-governed city in the central region.

Choosing Phu Quoc for 2027 reflects a bigger vision: not just developing a tourist destination, but building an international conference center. Geographically, Phu Quoc sits closer to other Southeast Asian capitals than Hanoi does, and it already has solid infrastructure — an international airport, five-star hotels, and luxury resorts.

▍ The 2027 Geopolitical Landscape

The international backdrop in 2027 is expected to be more challenging than 2017. Back then, Trump's first term saw frequent cabinet turnover and policy instability — the U.S.-China trade war did not launch until 2018.

By 2027, competition among major APEC economies will likely outweigh cooperation. Late in Trump's second term, with an eye on boosting the 2028 Republican presidential nominee, even more aggressive policy moves are possible.
