# Is Tesla Coming to Vietnam? It Just Registered a Company in Ho Chi Minh City

\[Is Tesla Coming to Vietnam? It Just Registered a Company in Ho Chi Minh City\]

Tesla now has a company of its own in Vietnam. Tesla Motors Vietnam LLC was established in Ho Chi Minh City on September 11, according to Vietnam's business registration records. Its charter capital is 77.667 billion dong, about USD 3 million, and it is licensed for wholesale, retail, import and export of cars, parts and machinery. That figure is the capital registered to complete investment paperwork. It does not reflect how much Tesla actually plans to spend in the country.

Tesla cars are not new to Vietnam. Private importers have brought in models such as the Model S, Model X and Model 3, and buyers have had to rely on those importers for warranty, repairs and parts. A local company lets Tesla import cars as the manufacturer, sign distribution deals or sell directly. It still has to complete the paperwork for importing, distributing and servicing cars before any sales can begin. Tesla has not announced which models it will sell in Vietnam, at what price or when, and it has not shared any charging plans.

The registration lists three key managers. The chairman is David Jon Feinstein, a U.S. national who worked on Tesla's entry into Taiwan and India. The general director is Isabel Ching Fan, also a U.S. national, who spent many years at Apple before joining Tesla, where she oversaw Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng is assistant to the general director.

Prices are unknown, but Vietnam's tax breaks for electric cars are settled. Lawmakers amended the tax law this year to keep the special consumption tax on battery electric cars with nine seats or fewer at 3%. The government also issued a decree waiving the first-time registration fee for electric cars. Both incentives run through the end of 2030\. Import duties will depend on where Tesla ships its cars from, and the company has not said.

Tesla is not the first Musk company to set up shop in Vietnam. SpaceX's satellite internet service Starlink registered a Vietnamese company last year, received a telecom license in February and started selling service in August.

In Vietnam's car market, Tesla's main rival will be homegrown brand VinFast. VinFast says it delivered more than 154,000 electric cars in Vietnam in the first eight months of this year.
